Since June 2013, Women in Egypt have been suffering from continuous violations and depravation of their basic human rights.
After the first three ladies were detained on July 3rd, 2013 in Alexandria, four more ladies were detained on July 5th, followed by the arrest of another lady on the 29th of the same month and It did not stop there and “WeRecord” documented many more.

On August 14th, 2013, the events of the Rabaa resulted in the killing of more than 920 people, 20 women among them, after that the police and armed forces felt empowered and committed a series of violations Arab women never experienced before.

In light of the lack of transparency of the official human rights institutions, and the lack of documentation of the human rights violations under the security control on the Egyptian media, WeRecord introduces this Statistical Observatory which is the output it presents to the public after an experimental launch of the interactive maps, which documented the members of the medical staff detained in Egypt.

This version of the observatory features multiple interactive statistical patterns of violations committed against Egyptian women, the database will be periodically updated and the updates will be live.

The Observatory’s beta version is the base of an expanded statistical project to monitor the violations experienced by the Arab citizen. WeRecord has formed many databases that monitor human rights violations in the Arab world, especially in prisons and detention facilities.

The documentation of the observatory’s data is based on what WeRecord documented through sources in prisons, detention facilities, security headquarters and keeping record of violations committed within these facilities. The current data includes all forms of restricted freedoms its terms conscience, political cases, enforced disappearances, women detainees, pretrial detainees and sentenced detainees.

The observatory displays its data based on various variables, to produce its information in multiple statistical forms. The statistics are related to the social status, age groups, governorates of residence, prisons, detention facilities, periods of arrest, convictions and enforced disappearance. The observatory can be considered a service for researchers as it can be relied upon directly in analyzing the data besides documenting it.

The observatory features a short stories series titled “Stories from the Dark – What you don’t know about them”, these stories showcase the real tragedy experienced by the women in Egypt, that goes beyond any numbers or statistical data.

The Observatory utilizes interactive maps to showcase the scope and extent of the violations and where they take place. The maps also allow easy access to more detailed information.

“WeRecord” hopes to motivate official entities in Egypt and in the international community to take the necessary measures to end the suffering of Egyptian women, release them immediately and improve the conditions of prisons and detention facilities.
